Things to Look for in Early, Middle and Late Stages of Alzheimer’s – Dementia Care

Assessing Early Stage Dementia Care Needs:

If your loved one is living independently with early stage dementia or Alzheimer’s you will need to assess their changing care needs on a regular basis. Listed below are things to look for each time you visit their home.

ü  Is your loved one eating regular nutritious meals?

ü  Is there fresh food in the refrigerator?

ü  What is the overall condition of the home? Has its maintenance changed?

ü  Are there stacks of unopened mail and are the bills being paid?

ü  Is your loved one bathing and grooming and keeping up their personal appearance?

ü  Is your loved one able to drive safely?

ü  Are friends and relatives visiting regularly?

Assessing Middle and Late Stage Dementia Care Needs:

Be aware that during the middle stages of dementia care, it will become extremely difficult and dangerous for you loved one to be left alone. Your loved one will probably require professional round the clock supervision.

Once the disease moves into the later stages, around-the-clock care needs will become more critical. There are several care options, including having a professional In-Home Caregiver provide care in the home, moving your love one into the home of a relative capable providing 24/7 care, or moving your loved one to a Memory Care or Assisted Living Community. Regardless of which care arrangement you may select, periodically assess the situation to make sure the needs of both the person living with dementia and family caregivers are being met.

ü  Is loved one getting the help they need with daily personal care, such as dressing, bathing, toileting and grooming?

ü  Have proper safety precautions been taken throughout their living environment? Do any additional precautions need to be taken?

ü  Is your loved one eating a healthy diet everyday?

ü  Does your loved one have reliable and safe transportation to doctor’s appointments and other events?

ü  Is your loved one engaged in meaningful activities throughout the week?
