Respite Care Gives a Needed Break to Professional Caregivers

It goes without saying that providing fulltime care for your loved one can be a tireless and thankless job. Many families find great joy in providing round the clock care for seniors, but the physical, emotional and financial consequences for the family caregiver can be overwhelming without regular outside support, such as professional respite care.

Respite care provides caregivers with short-term breaks that can relieve stress, restore energy, promote a balanced life or provide the time to take a much needed break or vacation. Professional Respite Care providers’ deliver temporary relief for those who are providing daily care for loved ones who might otherwise require permanent or long-term placement in an assisted living or nursing home community.

These respite breaks have proven to be beneficial to the health of everyone involved. Respite care has been shown to help sustain the health, wellbeing and mental attitude of family caregivers thereby avoiding or delaying out of home placements, also reducing the likelihood of abuse and neglect.

Listed below are the three main types of respite care. If you are unsure which one is right for you, consulting with you doctor can help provide peace of mind in your decision.

In-Home Respite Care

In-home care is the most popular for obvious reasons. A temporary respite care provider comes to the home, getting to know about the care recipient and their needs. The caregiver will learn about the household routine, daily medication schedule, where medicines and specifically needed care equipment are stored, as well as any other important care requirements of your loved one.  Just as importantly, in-home respite eliminates the need to move to a new and strange living environment.

Respite Care Facility

Professional Care Facilities are often the right choice. Assisted living and nursing home facilities provide experienced Respite Care where the care receiver may stay for a few days or even a few weeks. The advantage of this type of care is that the specialized facility will have a professional, skilled staff on hand 24 hours a day and will probably have better access to emergency facilities and other professional assistance if needed.

Emergency Respite Care

When providing care for a loved one, it’s important to plan for emergencies. Take the time to identify multiple respite care options, should an emergency arise. Many homecare agencies, adult day care, health centers, and residential care facilities provide respite care on an emergency basis.
