Diabetes Caregiving in Jacksonville

It is estimated that over 20% of seniors have diabetes.  Simply put, Diabetes is disease with unacceptable levels of blood glucose (blood sugar), either because natural insulin production is inadequate, or because the body’s cells are not responding properly to insulin.

  • Approximately 10% of diabetes sufferers have Type 1 diabetes, an incurable disease which is often diagnosed early in life. It is typically managed through daily monitoring, a program of regular exercise, medications, and healthy diet.
  • Approximately 90% of diabetes sufferers have Type 2 diabetes, which is often brought on as we age due to poor eating habits and overall nutrition, a lack of physical activity and weight gain. Prevalent in seniors, Type 2 diabetes can be treated and sometimes even eliminated with a change in lifestyle habit, but can get progressively worse if not well monitored and treated.

  • Break down caregiver activities into small, manageable tasks and try to establish a daily schedule and routine.
  • Be aware of your loved one’s need for independence and encourage their involvement in managing their own disease.
  • Learn as much as possible about the type of diabetes your loved one is dealing with.
  • Attend doctor visits, ask all your questions and for additional caregiving advice as it relates to your loved ones specific situation.
  • Ask the doctor about the patient’s blood glucose target range and the warning signs associated with improper glucose levels.
  • Learn how to use the meter to properly check blood glucose levels.
  • Become familiar with your loved one’s medication dosage and schedule. And be sure to check with your pharmacist for any possible interactions with other medications.
  • Learn how to properly inject prescribed diabetes medications like, insulin or exenatide.
  • Institute a diet that provides proper nutrition, including correct portioning of all meals, snacks and beverages. Be aware of how any of these items can affect glucose levels.
  • Establish a daily exercise or activity program that respects your loved ones level of overall fitness and mobility.
  • Create an emergency contact list and actions to take in case of a diabetes-related emergency such as diabetic ketoacidosis or dehydration from high blood sugar levels, or loss of consciousness from severe low blood sugar levels. Your doctor can advise you on which conditions require an immediate call to 911.

Being a caregiver can easily become a 24/7 responsibility that’s filled with stress for the patient, the caregiver and the entire family. For that reason, it is important for the caregiver to take good care of their own health. Be sure to eat right, get plenty sleep and exercise, and schedule some private time away from your patient. Consider placing your loved one in a Jacksonville Respite Care facility to provide you with a much needed rest, time for a family vacation or just to get away. Separation of patient and caregiver has proven to be beneficial to the health and emotional well-being for all.
