Staying Connected With Loved Ones in Senior Care Communities During Coronavirus

To help eliminate the spread of the coronavirus among senior residence, Nursing Homes, Senior Care Facilities and Assisted Living Communities are strictly adhering to CDC recommendations by restricting all visitors, volunteers, and nonessential personnel from entering their building. They have also cancelled most group activities and eliminated communal dining.

Seniors with memory issues like Alzheimer’s and other forms of Dementia are especially susceptible to becoming scared, agitated, or confused because they can’t understand or recall what’s causing these new lifestyle changes.

Help Your Loved Ones Eliminate the Feeling of Isolation, Anxious, and Depressed During This Difficult Time.

  • To brighten your loved ones day, ask family and friends to send them letters, cards, photos and fun things like activity books as often as possible. Everyone loves to get mail, especially when we’re feeling lonely or isolated. Your loved one can keep these items displayed in their room as constant reminders that they are loved, missed and being remembered.
  • Establishing a regular telephone call schedule and sticking to it will reassure your loved one that you care and that you’ll always be there for them. Knowing when to expect a call will help your loved one feel more secure and connected during these times of enforced isolation. Although texting and video calls are an easy way to connect – they are not a replacement for a good old fashioned phone call.
  • If you and your loved one are experienced computer users, consider making frequent video calls with them. There’s extra joy and reassurance in seeing the face of someone you know, and with visual contact you will be able to further assess their needs, level of health and overall well-being. There are many great and free video calling options available like Zoom, Skype and Google Hangouts.
  • Dropping off letters, jigsaw puzzles and activity books, works of art from the grandchildren or care packages are great ways to stay connected especially if your loved one is not capable of using a computer. Just check with the care community to see if you are allowed to drop off packages for them. If this is allowed, put together a box of basic supplies, photos, game, favorite snacks, and personal comfort items and drop it off for them. Remember to disinfect the box before deliver for safety!
  • Best of all – Stop by with family members and pets to wave hello and talk through the window.
